With all the doom and gloom the grant assistance provided has mostly dried up or been significantly cut back. There are however still some grants available for disadvantaged communities, older and disabled persons. Competition is fierce and to avoid delaying your project you must apply early. I have outlined below an explanation of the key grants available and the process involved.
Remember apply for grants before you do the work, as you will not be eligible if you get an early start
Who gives out the Grants?
The Department of the Environment assess grants related to the Gaeltacht areas and older and disabled person grants. The Heritage Council assesses grants related to essential repair of heritage buildings. Tourism Ireland, Leader funding and Cross Border Initiative offer funding for community-based projects

Can I get a grant if I live in the Gaeltacht?
If you live in a Gaeltacht or Island Community area you can apply for special “New House Grants”.
- New House on Mainland, 5,100 euro
- New Houses on Islands, 15,300 euro
If I am an older/disabled person can I get a grant?
The Dept of the Environment issue a number of grants to older people or people with disabilities.
Housing Adaptation Grant;
Grants are given for adaptations to a house to assist mobility around a dwelling. Grants are up to 30,000 Euro to cover 95% of works prioritisation on financial need with 95% reimbursement to people with incomes below 30,000 Euro/Annum. There is a new homes grant of up to 14,500 Euro.
Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme;
Grants are given to cover a basic suite of works to address mobility issues. Grants are up to 6,000 Euro to cover 100% of works prioritisation on financial need with 100% reimbursement to people with incomes below 30,000 Euro/Annum.
Housing Aid for older People;
Grants are given to cover necessary repairs and improvements. Grants are up to 10,500 Euro to cover 100% of works prioritisation on financial need with 100% reimbursement to people with incomes below 30,000 Euro/Annum.
Are there any conditions to the Grants?
For the Gaeltacht New Housing Grant you must be permanently resident within a recognised Gaeltacht region and Irish must be the normal spoken family language.
For Heritage grants you must demonstrate that the building is of Local or National Importance and that there is an immediate risk to the structure.
For Dept of Environment Older and Disability Person Grants you must demonstrate that your house is not suitable for your condition and that your income meets their minimum thresholds.
How long does it take to get the Grants?
Depending of the severity of the building degradation or medical disability applicants are assess on an as needed basis.
Can we get community grant assistance?
Communities can apply for Tourism Ireland, Leader Funding or Cross boarder initiative Funding to assist community based projects.
